Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nikolaos) or just “Agios’’ as the locals call it, dominates the beautiful Gulf of Mirabello on the northeast coast of Lasithi, 65 km east of Heraklion. It has 10000 permanent residents and, despite its limited extent, it is one of the biggest cities in Lasithi, the most eastern Prefecture of Crete.

The famous lake of Agios Nikolaos, around which the city is built, still impresses the visitors. Agios Nikolaos is located in the biggest natural gulf, the Gulf of Mirabello which is called like this, because of the beautiful view (mira bella), that somebody enjoys from the city to the sea. In the area of Amoudi is the commercial port of the city. The small islands Agioi Pantes, which shape the natural sea walls of the port, host a few ibexes that are under extinction.
