Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nikolaos) or just “Agios’’ as the locals call it, dominates the beautiful Gulf of Mirabello on the northeast coast of Lasithi, 65 km east of Heraklion. It has 10000 permanent residents and, despite its limited extent, it is one of the biggest cities in Lasithi, the most eastern Prefecture of Crete.

Agios Nikolaos is one of the first areas in Crete, from which the island’s tourism development started. The famous lake of Agios Nikolaos, around which the city is built, still impresses the visitors. Agios Nikolaos is located in the biggest natural gulf, the Gulf of Mirabello which is called like this, because of the beautiful view (mira bella), that somebody enjoys from the city to the sea. In the area of Amoudi is the commercial port of the city. The small islands Agioi Pantes, which shape the natural sea walls of the port, host a few ibexes that are under extinction.
Agios Nikolaos is a famous travel destination for different groups of people: young and elders, singles, couples and families, but also for those who prefer to spend their holidays in a place which is not so crowded as other famous resorts of Crete. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the city does not offer the facilities that other places offer: Restaurants of any taste, taverns with traditional dishes of high quality, bars offering nights of relaxation, sandy beaches and of course, a variety of luxurious Crete villas with pool.
