About the area
The villa was built in 2009 in an idyllic spot in the village of Kambia, near Plaka in Apokoronas, Chania, looking out over the wonderful Souda Bay and the White Mountains. The traditional village of Plaka is 600 m away, with a mini market, restaurants serving traditional Mediterranean, Greek and Cretan food, and plenty of cafés.

The sandy beach of Almyrida, 2 km away, is awarded a Blue Flag every year for its crystal clear water, and offers every kind of water sport.
There is a health centre 8 km away, and all the basic services, such as banks, a post office, supermarkets and an internet café, are in the village of Kalyves, 6 km away. Souda Port is 18 km away and Chania Airport 34 km, about 50 minutes by car.
The legendary film Zorba the Greek, starring Anthony Quinn and based on the book by Nikos Kazantzakis, was filmed in the area.
The villa makes a perfect holiday base, combining a quiet stay, a perfect climate and Cretan hospitality with easy access to sights such as the castle of Aptera, Lake Kournas, the Samaria Gorge, the tombs of the Venizelos family and the Venetian harbour of Chania.
About 1.3 km away, near the entrance to Almyrida, are the excavated remains of an early Christian basilica with a fine mosaic floor.
Near the villa are the hill of Drepanokefala and Cape Drapanos, where the Elephant Cave lies on the seabed at a depth of 10 m: a 60 x 60 m underwater hall full of stalactites and stalagmites. In Kokkino Chorio, the Red Village, about 2 km away, scenes from Zorba the Greek were filmed, the mines dug during the German occupation still survive, and a traditional glass workshop makes unique handmade glass.
There are plenty of traditional tavernas, cafés, mini markets and other shops all around the area.
The countryside around the villa is perfect for walks. The gorge just in front of the villa runs down to the sea and the rocky coast of Nerospilia, a spot well worth visiting and ideal for a picnic.

Great holidays The villa is very nice, the hosts even nicer and very very kind, helpful and pretty easy going! We were very surprised with much of attention from the hosts and the amounts of delicate food and desserts they prepared for us. Pool was nice and clean. The view astonishing. The only what disturbed us in the 2nd half of holidays was the wind, but this is what Northern Crete is known for and maybe in the main season can be much appreciated.
