Area

Villa Thea is a newly built construction (completed on 10/2008) situated at the traditional village of Kournas, a village perched on a hill overlooking Lake Kournas and the big blue.

The village of Kournas is located at 43km (26.7 miles) from Chania, 20km (12.5 miles) from Rethymnon and only 7km (4.3miles) from the seaside resort of Georgioupolis, with its long stretch of beach, well organized for swimming, water sports, dining, drinking and shopping.

Back at the village of Kournas, it is definitely worth visiting the old byzantine churches (such as the churches of St. George, St. Anna), the Minoan dome-shaped tomb (situated on the hill next to Filaki), the small cave of Kournas, discovered by chance and later explored by Eleftherios Platakis, and, last but not least, Lake Kournas.

Lake Kournas is the only natural fresh water lake of Crete, with a maximum length of 1080 meters (0.67 miles) and a maximum width of 880 meters (0.54 miles). Its maximum depth is calculated at 22.5 meters (approx 74 feet).

References to the lake date back to ancient times, under the name of Korisia. In Arabic, the name Kournas means bathtub or lake; so, it might have been the Arabs that renamed the lake from Korisia to Kournas. Its dark waters impressed visitors and locals alike, since the lake was considered to be bottomless.

The picturesque lake is surrounded by dense vegetation of osier and myrtle trees, while olive trees adorn its southeastern side. The white sand beach around the lake makes it ideal for swimming. Do not miss out on enjoying a boat tour of the lake and to savour the delicious local meze at the traditional tavernas nearby.

A myth regarding the creation of the lake, tells us that initially, there was a village in its place. One day, one of the villagers took his daughter and headed to their farms to work. On the way, they stopped to rest, and the daughter starting brushing her long blond hair. At first, her father was just admiring his daughter, but then, all of a sudden, he forgot it was his daughter and desired her with lust. The daughter, desperate, asked to be able to say only a few words, and those were "sink and sink with the lake! And me, a spirit of the lake!" Immediately, the place sank and the lake appeared. Actually, in the olden times, it was thought that those among the folk that are "moon struck" (that is, able to see spirits and ghosts) could also see a maiden sitting atop a rock in the middle of the lake, brushing her golden locks.

Also, if you happen to be in the area in August, it is worth visiting the local fare of St. John the Baptist on the 28/8, to enjoy the cretan dances and songs and of course to taste the traditional cretan cuisine.
