During the Hellenistic period (4th-1st century b.C.) the city minted its own coins, while up to 2 nd century b. C. had under its control more land than any other Cretan city. At 66 b.C. the city was occupied by the Romans and destroyed, but built again gaining back its former glory. The dominant position in eastern Crete maintained during the Byzantine period. It was Episcopal headquarters that included in addition to the area of ‚Äč‚ÄčIerapetra and Sitia and Mirabello.
