ROUSTIKA

Roustika has been inhabited since the Venetian Occupation. Venetian and Turkish buildings, important Byzantine monuments, beautiful squares, picturesque coffee shops and narrow alleyways weave the village's web, which constitutes an attraction pole for the tourists while preserving its authenticity.

The most important monuments in Roustika are: the church of the Assumption of the Virgin, with its frescoes dating from 1381, its beautiful wood-carved iconostasis and its exceptional steeple, located in the homonymous square. The monastery of the Prophet Elias, with its beautiful courtyard, situated in the south-east end of the village and dating back to 1637. The Renaissance church of Aghios Haralambos (Saint Haralambos) in the main square of the village.

One picturesque taverns offer traditional cuisine, one alternative snacks and an old grocery sells first necessity goods, thus serving both the local population and the visitors.

On July 19 and August 5, festivals are organized with Cretan music and folkloric dances.

THE SURROUNDINGS

Roustika is located at the heart of an area of unique natural beauty, with exceptional landscape and floral alternations: fertile slopes planted with cereals, vines, olive trees, and the woodland in the north alternate with the wild nature of the gorges in the south. The European path E4 crosses the village, with tracks that lend themselves to walking and mountaineering.

There are other worth-visiting areas of exceptional beauty within a 20-km range: the gorge of Kotsifos, the Preveli delta, in which the Great Lake (Megas Potamos) discharges, with its palm trees and its wild vegetation, the water sources of Argyroupolis and the Lake of Kournas, the only lake in Crete.

Wonderful beaches spread not far from the village: unfolding in the north, the long sandy beaches of Episkopi (13,5 km), of Georgioupolis (15 km), of Petres (17 km) and of the city of Rethymno (21 km). Southwards, at a distance of 18,5 km, stretch the beaches of Plakias and of Souda, and a little farther, those of Triopetras, of Aghios Pavlos (Saint Paul) of the Preveli delta (25 km).

Roustika is in the vicinity of villages of a particular architectural and historical interest, such as the Venetian villages of Mountros (2 km), Zouridi (4 km), Aghios Konstantinos (Saint Constantine) (1,5 km and at a greater distance, the villages of Myriokefala (18 km) and Argyroupolis (10 km), in the place of the ancient city of Lappa.

Finally, Rethymno, capital of the prefecture, with its Venetian fortress, its minarets, its Old Town, its infinite sandy beach of palm trees, its market and its rich cultural life, is connected daily to Roustika by the KTEL bus services (duration of the line 25 minutes).
