In the wider area are the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna, "Homer in Crete", built to house the finds of thirty years of excavation in the ancient city, and Arkadi Monastery, which played a major part in the Cretan struggle for independence from the Ottomans; its museum displays icons and portraits of the freedom fighters.
Further afield, Crete has a sight for every day of a holiday: the Minoan palace of Knossos and the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, with the finest collection of Minoan art and the Phaistos Disc; the Samaria Gorge, a 16 km walk of four to six hours from the Omalos plateau down to Agia Roumeli; the island fortress of Spinalonga, reached by boat from Plaka, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos; the palm forest of Vai; the Lasithi Plateau with the cave of Zeus; and the Venetian fortress of Frangokastello.
Chania's old town and Venetian harbour are among the most atmospheric places on Crete, with countless little streets, local crafts such as rugs, leather work and handmade knives, and the covered market.
