Area

Kournas Lake

Apokoronas is one of the five former provinces of Chania prefecture and is situated at the northeast part of the prefecture. Kournas is one of the area's traditional villages. The area of Apokoronas extends from the foothills of Lefka Ori north to the beach, with several gulfs, such the gulf of Almyros and Georgioupolis.

Kournas Lake, 3 km from Georgioupolis, is the southern lake of whole Europe. It is created thanks to the underground water coming down from Lefka Ori and is trapped by the impervious rocks within the natural basin.

Lake Kournas was known in antiquity as Lake Koressia. Its current name comes from the Arabic language and means bathtub and lake. The lake's dark waters impress not only the visitors but also the natives, thus there is the belief that it is bottomless. The lake has some more legends and of course its own water nymph who appears on moonlit nights, combing her hair.

The villas lie above Lake Kournas on the north end of Chania prefecture, almost in the middle between Chania (40 km to the east) and Rethymno (30 km to the west). From Kournas you can easily get to the highway (1000 m) and visit Chania, the Omalos plateau, the Samaria Gorge (79 km), Fragokastelo and other places in Chania prefecture, or drive west and visit Rethymno with the impressive castle or Heraklion and Knossos (105 km), an important town in the antiquity.

There are daily departures from Piraeus to the port of Souda, only 30 km form the lake. You could also travel by aeroplane to Chania or Heraklion from Athens or most European cities.

WANDERING AROUND KOURNAS LAKE

Kournas Lake is one of the favourite destinations for all Crete visitors. It is the ideal place to relax while going for a nice walk. Walking all around the lake with the blue and green water takes less than an hour (3,5 km. ). You can enjoy a nice meal in one of the taverns or cafés. There are little beaches with white sand just in front of the taverns, where you can rest or take a swim. You could also rent a water bike and ride on the lake.

Around the lake there are many places to visit, giving you the opportunity either to walk or to make a day trip by car/ motorbike. While admiring the lake you can also see Lefka Ori on your right and if you drive to the other direction you will get to Georgioupolis with its beautiful bay or to the beaches of Kavros and Episkopi with big sandy hills and crystal clear water. You could also drive to the village Argyroupolis and refresh yourself by its wonderful water springs.

The village Kournas lies about 4 km from the lake. It is a traditional village, unaffected by tourism, with wonderful green nature. There is the Church of Agios Georgios, a church built in the Byzantine times with architectural features added later during the Venetian period. Between the village and the lake of Kournas is the Kournas Cave, a small but very pretty cave with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Not far from Kournas is the village Vryses, a big village with green nature also worth visiting.

If you drive further with direction to the south (Sfakia) you will have the chance to visit some more interesting places. First, the Krapi plateau and then the Askyfou plateau, where some very important battles of the Cretan folk have taken place during the Venetian period and the Turkish occupation. The way to the south is more than impressive: you can see gorges with big, sharp rocks, wild mountain landscape, but also olive groves, streams, gardens with vegetables and wine bowers. While approaching the south coast the view is enchanting. You can see the sea and the small islands Paximadia, as well as the village Fragokastelo. You can then take the road to Fragokastelo or to Chora Sfakion. From C there is a daily ferry to and from the Samaria Gorge. The ferry can also take you to other south coast beaches, such as Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Sugia andPaleochora or to the island Gavdos.

Villa with a spectacular view

We stayed at Villa Dafni for 2 weeks Sep/Oct 2018. The Villa was decorated to a high standard with modern soft furnishings and the garden and terrace landscaped with beautiful plants flowers and trees. Villa Dafne is one of 2 villas built side by side on a hill overlooking Lake Kournas and the mountains. Each villa has its own terrace and private pool. The view is stunning and a pleasure to wake up to each day. The hosts greeted us warmly and even left us gifts of a beautiful homemade cake, raki and delicious olive oil. Eleftheria and her parents did all they could to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. All essentials were provided in the villa. We felt very at home . Eleftheria offers a twice weekly cleaning service. The host advised us of the local tavernas and places to visit. We visited the local Kavalos Taverna three times, one evening we even had a takeaway from them. We were welcomed each time with a warm and friendly service and Eleftheria [cousin of the host] took time to explain the menu and give advice. Be warned the portions are huge!!We also visited Georgias another local taverna. and Babis and Athitis both in Georgioupoli. We can recommend them all. The villa is ideally situated , remote enough to relax and enjoy the views and swimming pool but also only a 10minute drive into the pretty Georgioupoli if you fancy a bit more bustle. From here you can pick up the main road to visit other parts of the beautiful island. We visited the Venetian ports of Chania and Rethymnon both worth a visit. We drove into the mountains and visited a few pretty villages with Churches and artisan shops selling their own produced olive oil , pottery and other products. We would like to thank Effe at Cretico for all her help and advice at the booking stage. We highly recommend Villa Dafni and hope to return oneday. Thank you Eleftheria and family for making our holiday so special and for the beautiful parting gifts, Tim and Akie Carter Surrey. England
