The villa is located near the small picturesque village of Kalamitsi Amygdali, on the slope of the hill to the north of the village. There are about 210 permanent residents in the village, which belongs to the broader area of the municipality of Apokoronas, an area noted for its natural scenery. Here, the rough beauty of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) to the south-west meets the refreshing charm of the north Cretan coastline, at one of its most attractive spots. Τhe vegetation in the area is lavish as there are many underground and overground streams originating on the mountains.
The numerous small villages that form the area of Apokoronas are, with no doubt, of the most worth-visiting sights for those who would wish to get in touch with the true local traditions and way of living. Each one of them has a hidden gem to discover: the tiny silk making co-operative which is run by the women of Kalamitsi Amygdali, the "Art of Living Glass" factory in Kokkino Chorio, one of the few remaining of its kind in whole Europe, representing a historical and cultural landmark and preserving the fine craft of glassmaking, many archaeological and historical sites and monuments , such as the ruins of Aptera (one of the major cities-states of Crete, mentioned in the Linear B tablets, 14th-13th century BC), the fort of Koules in Paleokastro and other fortresses (built by the Turks after the Cretan Revolution of 1866 to form a network of towers in order to control the Cretans), the Castle of Intzentin (built in 1867 and operating until 1971 as a place of incarceration of political prisoners), the Monastery of St. George in Karidi, a magnificent architectural monument, restored in 1996 .
Apart from the above, a variety of cultural events and traditional feasts take place within the region all through the year. The origins of most of them, are traced back even millennia.
In all those attractive, scenic villages, visitors will have the chance to taste first-hand, home-made traditional dishes, served in small local taverns and so-called kafenia, tiny traditional cafes/taverns that might even seem like the backyard of a home, ready to welcome any visitor that passes by. Often, there is no specific menu to choose from but a collection of whatever can be prepared from seasonal ingredients just picked from the crops of the owners. The result will truly blow up your mind! In the larger of the villages, such as Vrisses, Vamos, and Georgioupolis, many more entertainment and gastronomical options are available, along with mini-markets, supermarkets, groceries, pharmacies, banks, and whatever might be needed during your vacation.
Kalamitsi Amygdali is the ideal place for someone wishing to become part of a traditional and peaceful community having easy access to amenities and splendid nearby beaches.
