About the area

Anyone staying in Skouloufia should also visit the Melidoni Cave, of great archaeological, speleological and historical interest. The village has several traditional cafés and tavernas beside the stream bed with its lush vegetation, and for a more cosmopolitan evening out, Rethymno blends the past, through its well preserved monuments, with the modern way of life.
The village appears as "Spilufia" in sources from the 15th and 16th centuries, was well known during the Ottoman period and has a rich history. Leonidas Bogiatzoglou came from here, as did many other brave men who fought for the freedom of Crete. Skouloufia was also the home of the beautiful Helen Volonaki, who was taken as a slave and became Sultana after marrying the Albanian Mustafa Naili, known as "Giritli", meaning "the Cretan", because of his long stay on the island. The Ottomans caused great destruction in the village, as across Crete, as in the holocaust of Arkadi, in which many men from Skouloufia took part.
Many monuments survive today, mainly Byzantine churches: the church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John), whose sarcophagus is engraved with the date 1531, the church of the Virgin Mary and the church of Agia Paraskevi. An old olive press has also been restored and now faithfully shows the whole traditional process of olive oil production.
