The village takes its name from the Cave of Ai-Yiannis Erimitis, on the hill above the village to the west, a site of great historical importance with reputed healing waters and fine views over the olive groves, the sea and the White Mountains. The Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa dominates the village, and nearby, under centuries-old plane trees beside a spring, a locally run taverna serves traditional food, five minutes' walk from the villa. Three small mini markets sell fresh bread, fruit, vegetables and everyday essentials.

Kolymvari, five minutes by car, has the Monastery of Gonia and the Orthodox Academy of Crete, many tavernas and kafenia, a post office, a medical centre, a doctor's surgery and pharmacy, a supermarket and banks with cash machines. The area is known for fish landed fresh in the harbour, for the wine of Kissamos and for its award-winning, low acidity olive oil.

Spilia is well placed for the finest beaches of western Crete: Falasarna, with its long sandy beach and ancient town, about 40 minutes away; the lagoon of Elafonisi, about an hour away; and the lagoon of Balos at Gramvousa, whose port is a 15 minute drive. Platanias, 10 minutes away, has beach bars, nightlife and windsurfing, and the central hospital is just outside Chania, 20 to 25 minutes by car.

  • What a wonderful break! My husband & I have just had a wonderful stay in the little cottage. It's the perfect retreat to disconnect from our busy lives. The host Manolis is very accommodating and you can ask him about anything you need to know whilst enjoying your stay here. Highly recommended
