About the area
The villa stands above Lake Kournas in Apokoronas, almost halfway between Chania, 44 km to the west, and Rethymno, 30 km to the east, with the beach at Georgioupoli 3 km away. The national road is only 1 km away, so the whole of western and central Crete is within easy reach.

Lake Kournas is fed by underground water flowing down from the White Mountains and is said to be the southernmost lake in Europe. In antiquity it was known as Lake Koresia; its present name comes from Arabic and means lake, and legend has it that a water nymph appears on moonlit nights combing her hair. The 3.5 km walk around its blue and green water takes less than an hour, and you can eat at one of the tavernas or cafés, swim from the little sandy beaches in front of them or hire a pedalo.
There is plenty to see around the lake. Georgioupoli has a beautiful bay, the beaches of Kavros and Episkopi have big dunes and clear water, and the village of Argyroupoli is known for its springs. The traditional village of Kournas, about 4 km from the lake, has the Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, and Kournas Cave, between the village and the lake, has impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The large green village of Vrysses is close by.
Further afield are the Samaria Gorge (79 km), Knossos (112 km) and the fortress of Rethymno. Driving south across the Krapi and Askyfou plateaus, through gorges and wild mountain scenery, you reach Frangokastello and Chora Sfakion, where a daily ferry runs along the south coast to Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Sougia and Paleochora, and to the island of Gavdos. There are daily ferries from Piraeus to Souda, 36 km from the lake.
